Symbolic realism
Victor Trumpets Dogs by Josslyn Martin Art This original painting by Martin is inspired by the Australian short story The Day I Bowled Victor Trumper Out by Dal Stivens. The narrative centres on a colourful character known as “Victor Trumpet,” the name Martin given to a stout miner with only a few inches of lung left. The story unfolds through the rambling, often nonsensical conversation of two men, blending humour with exaggeration. One claim dominates their talk: the fat miner’s boast that he once bowled the legendary cricketer Victor Trumper out for a duck. The cricket pitch was near a 1400 foot sandstone cliff.
Martin’s painting captures the spirit of tall tales, memory, and Australian storytelling, where fact and fiction blur in the telling.

Vincents Orchard
Additional Information
Victor’s Orchard by Josslyn Martin Art.
Naturalistic/abstract
An Original Art work This painting by Martin, began as a quiet landscape near Mount Compass, on the edge of the Fleurieu Peninsula, gradually transformed into something more evocative. The original farm scene felt incomplete, prompting a reconsideration of its terrain.
The idea of an abandoned orchard came to mind—trees weathering through time, yet still pushing out blossoms each year. That quiet resilience reshaped the work, giving rise to Victor’s Orchard, where naturalistic detail merges with abstract gesture to honour places that persist even as human stories fade.

Saving Giuliano
Additional Information
Saving Giuliano : by Josslyn Martin Art – Limited edition (100) print. This larger A2 print of Josslyn’s painting, which was initially inspired by a photograph taken by the American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1939 — specifically, an image of Chris Adolph’s younger children. When Josslyn first saw Dorothea’s photo she commented, “Something about their expressions, the setting, the rawness of it — it all struck a deep chord. It immediately brought to mind Australia’s own Depression-era struggles. Times when food was scarce and rabbits, for many, became a vital source of protein and survival.”
In this full reproduction of the painting you see both sides of a conflict. To the right of Alessia and her pet rabbit, you see her home, with the washing hanging outside, and a sign that the farm is still occupied. This represents safety. To the left, signs of fear, pain, isolation and death depicted by the scarcrow the barbed wire and the black crows.
